"Sacrifices" de V.S. Naipaul
Sir Vidiadhar Surajprasad Naipaul, plus connu sous la signature V.S. Naipaul ,est né le 17 août 1932 à Trinidad dans les Caraïbes et décédé le 11 août 2018 à Londres au Royaume-Uni. Ses aïeux étaient venus d'Inde vers 1880 afin de remplacer, sur les plantations de Trinidad, les esclaves noirs. Les membres de sa famille maternelle ne sont pas restés de la main d’œuvre mais sont devenus de grands propriétaires terriens sur cette île caribéenne. V.S. Naipaul, inspiré par son père journaliste, avait été un brillant élève. Il obtient une bourse et quitte à 18 ans son île et sa famille pour suivre des études littéraires à Oxford. Il sera naturalisé anglais en 1952. Durant toute sa vie, V. S. Naipaul avait été un grand voyageur, il avait sillonné la planète où il trouva l’inspiration à ses écrits.
Dans "Sacrifices", V. S. Naipaul nous offre deux longs récits personnels.
"Prologue à une autobiographie" est sans conteste le récit le plus intéressant de cet ouvrage car V.S. Naipaul nous fait découvrir son enfance à Trinidad. Dans ce récit très touchant, il nous fait découvrir ses origines indiennes et certaines histoires familiales. Il nous conte dans les grandes lignes, sa jeunesse sur l'île caribéenne et les nombreux déménagements qu'il a connu. Dans "Prologue à une autobiographie", V.S. Naipaul a attaché beaucoup d'importance à y parler de son père. Ce dernier avait été journaliste et à ses heures perdues écrivain, c'est lui qui a donné à V.S. le goût de la littérature et de l'écriture, et l'envie de devenir écrivain. Ce récit est également l'occasion pour V.S. Naipaul de nous fait découvrir la naissance de son premier grand roman "Miguel Street" (en hommage à la rue qui l'a vu grandir) alors qu'il travaillait comme pigiste au Caribbean Service de la BBC à Londres.
Le second récit, nommé "Les Crocodiles de Yamoussoukro", V.S. Naipaul nous fait découvrir son travail investigation lorsqu'il voyage. Il ramène son lecteur au début des années 1980 à la découverte de la Côte d'Ivoire, un pays qui, après la décolonisation, se construit. Yamoussoukro avait été un village, celui de Félix Houphouët-Boigny qui en fit une ville démesurée où la véritable attraction, outre son architecture complètement décalé à rapport au reste du pays, était le nourrissage des crocodiles. Peu de temps après le voyage de V.S. Naipaul, Yamoussoukro devient la capitale officielle de la Côte d'Ivoire (1983).
"Sacrifices" permet à son lecteur de découvrir qui a été V.S. Naipaul et quel citoyen du monde il a été. Certes ces récits datent d'il y a près de quatre décennies, mais ils permettent au lecteur de faire un voyage dans le temps et dans l'histoire.
"Sacrifices" est un bon livre d'occasion.
